Using Sharpen Reading for the first time

Sharpen Reading is designed to run on two separate digital devices: one for the Instructor and one for the Learner. It works on desktop, laptop, tablet, and mobile devices, but the Learner will have the best experience on a touch-screen tablet/computer.

There are 5 steps for using Sharpen Reading for the first time, after setting up your Sharpen account.

  1. Log in as Instructor on one device
  2. Complete the first-time walkthrough
  3. Start a lesson and proceed with the activities
  4. Have the Learner log in on a separate device
  5. Proceed with your lesson

Log in as Instructor on one device

If you are not already logged in, visit https://reading.sharpen.com to access the Sharpen Reading login page. Click the Instructor Login button.

Login with the username and password you entered when you created your Sharpen account.

Complete the first-time walkthrough

Review the introductory screens and watch the 2-minute introductory video. Click Continue to move through the screens. You will only go through this the first time you use the reading program.

Start a lesson

On your Instructor device, click on the Start Lesson button.
The first lesson screen will now appear on your Instructor device...

Once you do this, you will see the instructions for what the learner needs to do on the second device.

Have the Learner log in on a separate device

As per the instructions on the instructor session start page, on a separate table or computer, visit https://reading.sharpen.com and have the Learner log in. Click "Learner Login":

When the User ID and Passcode boxes appear, enter the values on the instructor screen. In this example the User ID for the learner is 1627181 and the passcode is 133135. The User ID and passcode for your learner will be different.

Perform your lesson

Now that your devices are synced, you may begin the lesson. The instructor screen will have the details of what you need to do to help your learner through the program

...and on the Learner's device will show the activity that is currently being worked on.

To end a lesson, click End Lesson on the Instructor screen and confirm.
